Every registered resident in Japan, including foreign residents with a registered address, is assigned a 12-digit Individual Number (My Number). The assigned number generally remains the same throughout your residence in Japan; change is limited to exceptional statutory cases, such as a recognized risk of financial or identity misuse following number leakage.
2. Applying for the Physical My Number Card
While your 12-digit number is assigned automatically upon address registration, obtaining the plastic IC-equipped My Number Card requires a separate application. Applications can be submitted online via smartphone, by mail using the application form, or at designated municipal counters.
3. Administrative Uses, Residence Status Validity, and Card Security
The My Number Card serves as an official identity document. Validity treatment of the card depends on residence status: residents with a limited period of stay should check renewal or extension procedures at their municipal office before card expiry, whereas permanent residents and other categories are handled under different validity timelines.
