Moving Within Japan: Address Change and Administrative Checklist

If you move within the same city or ward, you submit a change of address notification (転居届). If moving to a different municipality, you must obtain a moving-out certificate (転出証明書) from your old office before registering your moving-in notification (転入届) at your new municipality.

Moving-out notifications can typically be submitted prior to moving or shortly thereafter. Moving-in notifications at your new municipality must be submitted after establishing your new residence, bringing your Residence Card and valid identity documents.

Under Immigration Services Agency rules for mid-to-long-term foreign residents, a change of domestic residence address must be reported within 14 days after moving to the new address. Completing the resident registration notification at the municipal window while presenting your Residence Card serves as the statutory residence-address notification to the ISA.

Update the printed address on the front of your My Number Card at the municipal window. National Health Insurance and Pension records are updated during municipal registration. If holding a Japanese driver's license, update your address at a local police station or driver licensing center.

Inform your employer HR for commuting allowance and tax updates. Update your registered address with your bank, credit card issuers, mobile phone carrier, utility providers (electricity, gas, water), and file a postal mail forwarding request with Japan Post.

Keep a written or digital checklist of completed address updates. Retain receipts and confirmation slips from municipal counters to verify that all statutory administrative requirements have been satisfied.
